Streetwear Essentials
Streetwear Essentials is a course for individuals interested in developing an understanding of the industry, its scope and breadth, and how all the parts work together to explore while identifying the best career path for them in that industry. Streetwear is a broad and imperfect label — its meaning malleable, often debated, endlessly re-imagined, and imbued with race and socioeconomic undertones. Students gain a basic understanding of the career options, terminology, and general knowledge needed to take on an entry-level role in the industry or even start a brand of their own. This course provides students with real world projects and experiential learning opportunities to prepare them to work in the streetwear industry.
Students take this course so that they can:
Begin a career as an entrepreneur in the streetwear industry
Research, design, and develop a range of products
Understand personal style and what it represents for the individual
Create a communication strategy for a range of products and brand identity
Understanding the geographical and cultural development of streetwear and its impact on other sectors
Master the basics of manufacturing, distribution and retail
Acquire the terminology and industry best practices necessary to work at a streetwear brand
Streetwear Essentials consists of five course modules:
Streetwear Origins
Designing Streetwear
Marketing, Branding, and Visual Communication
The Future of Streetwear, Retail and Distribution
Business and Entrepreneurship

The course is built on video lectures by faculty and practitioners. We use a two-camera setup, but for each course we filmed in a manner appropriate to the overall course concept. For this course, we wanted a full-body shot of each designer or expert seated on a modern chair in a white, gallery-like space to highlight the experience of listening to an artist in a studio.

Courses use the LearnDash LMS. From the course page, students can access the learning modules (5-6 per course).

For each module, I designed 1-2 activities based on a real-world skill needed within the profession, creating templates and examples for the students as needed. These activities build toward a final capstone project.

Teaching points that require more explanation than possible in B-roll receive on-page support as text, image, or infographics.

Though focusing on the singular figure of each speaker, the course content is elucidated and expanded with scenes from the works being discussed, on-screen definitions, and illustrative B-roll.

Students can also navigate 360 VR tours of retail spaces and designers’ studios. Clicking on highlighted objects provides course content related to that element in the space.

Knowledge-check quizzes might have a bad reputation, but any moment of questioning is also a teaching opportunity. They are used throughout to A) reinforce needed factual knowledge, B) encourage learners to consider points of differentiation other than presented in the course materials, or C) ask learners to extrapolate from what they’ve learned to new situations.

Original and subject-area specific definitions of key terms are available by mouseover throughout the course.

A well-researched interactive timeline gives the student extensive historical setting for the industry and helps contextualize the milestones discussed in the video lectures.
